Mr. Nicholas Shurtleff
Nicholas Shurtleff is the Director of Bands for the Jessieville School District. He is currently in his 9th year of teaching and his 6th year at Jessieville. Under Mr. Shurtleff’s direction, the Legend of Jessieville Marching Band has consistently received Superior or Excellent ratings at Region Marching and Concert Assessments, and has qualified for State Marching Contest each year under his direction.
Mr. Shurtleff began his teaching career at Robert F. Morehead Middle School in Pine Bluff, AR. He has also taught in the Pulaski County Special School District.
Mr. Shurtleff is a native of Bryant, Arkansas and attended Bryant High School. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Central Arkansas where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. While at UCA, he performed with the Bear Marching Band, UCA Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Bands, Jazz Band, Dixieland Band, Saxophone Ensemble, and Saxophone Quartet. These ensembles led him to perform all over the United States. He studied saxophone with Dr. Jackie Lamar and conducting with Dr. Rickie Brooks and Dr. Steven Smyth.
In his spare time, Mr. Shurtleff is an avid golfer. He also enjoys traveling, camping, and spending time on the beach. Mr. Shurtleff has been married to his wife, Erin, for 10 years. Erin teaches at Garland County Schools’ Pre-K in Hot Springs. They have one son, Keegan (4), Gemmalynn (<1)and two toy rat terriers named Button and Zipper.
Mr. Shurtleff is a member of: Arkansas Educators Association, National Educators Association, Arkansas Band Masters Association, Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity Life Loyal, and North American Saxophone Alliance.
