Mrs. Denise Smith

Hi! My name is Denise Smith. I am the elementary librarian at Jessieville. I started teaching at Jessieville in 1996. I taught kindergarten when I first came to Jessieville. Later, I went to Arkansas Tech and got my Masters in Library Science so I could be the elementary librarian. I love being the librarian for several reasons. I get to see all the elementary kids in the library at least once a week. Another reason is that I get to be with books all day long and I love to read.

I have several duties that I perform at the elementary. First and foremost I am the librarian. Secondly, I am in charge of the Accelerated Reader program at the elementary. Every student has a point goal set for them every nine weeks by their teacher. At the end of the nine weeks if they have met their goal they get to attend a popcorn and coke party. This is a great way to encourage the kids to read. I also do an AR store every nine weeks. At the end of every nine weeks, the students get to come to the library and spend their points at the AR store. The store consists of small toys and pencils. There are toys in buckets that start at 5 points and go up to 50 points. The kids love to come and spend their points. At the end of the year, we give away bicycles, bookshelves full of books, and kindle fires to reward the kids for their points and reading growth.

My main goal in the library is to try to instill a love of reading to all students!
