ELL

Welcome to ELL

English-language learners, or ELLs, are students who are unable to communicate fluently or learn effectively in English, who often come from non-English-speaking homes and backgrounds, and who typically require specialized or modified instruction in both the English language and in their academic courses.

Jessieville School District complies with state and federal laws in identifying, assessing, and providing English as a Second Language (ESL) services to ELL students at our schools.

All students are required to complete a Home Language Survey upon enrollment, which helps identify those whose home or first language is one other than English. Upon completion of the survey, students are assessed to find their level of English fluency. Depending on the results they may be eligible for ESL services, which are voluntary and may be refused by a guardian.

Each qualified student entered in the program receives ESL services tailored to his or her individual needs, with the goal of full English fluency for all. Students are assessed annually with a state-mandated fluency test in the early spring to check progress. Once students are assessed as fluent English speakers, they exit the ELL program yet are monitored by their instructors for two additional years to ensure their success.
